Sherawali Mata, or Ma Sherawali, as she is hailed, is an aspect of Goddess Shakti, who descended the earth to destroy evil forces and bring peace and joy back to the world. Legend has it that the Gods, tormented and troubled by the powerful demon, Mahisha, called on Ma Shakti's grace. The She with her Ashtabhuja (eight hands) royally ascended her vehicle, the tiger, and proceeded for the battle. All the Devas (Gods) gave her their respective weapons, with which she was to fight Mahisha. Wielding her own Trisula (trident), a bow and arrow, a sword a mace and the discus, she performs austere penance in order to slay the terrible one. On the tenth day of battle, she finally triumphs and victors over the demon.
