The concept of male and female energies, the synergy of yin and yang, could not have been more brilliantly explained than the concept of Ardhanarishwara. Ardhanarishwara is the image of a half Shiva and half Shakti, merging into each other, to form a perfect whole. Lord Shiva, who represents Tandava or the male energy, is shown on the right hand side. He is dressed in tiger skin and holds the Trident or the Trisula and the Damaru in His right hand. He is adorned with ashes (Vibhuti) and a snake curls itself around His neck. Standing at His side is His vehicle, Nandi.
Shakti or Parvati, His divine consort, is shown on the left side. She is dressed in Her sari and is adorned with traditional gold ornaments. She depicts Lasya or the feminine side of the Universe. She holds a lotus and has Her vehicle, the lion, standing beside Her. This brilliant poster shows the perfect harmony between male and female energies in this world.
