India is a land of many immortal love stories. Sohni Mahiwal is one such story which has a tragic, lingering ending. Sohni, the daughter of a potter, lived in the Punjab on the banks of the river Sindhu. She spent her time drawing beautiful floral designs on water pitchers, transforming them into exquisite pieces of art.
Izzat Biag, a rich trader, was smitten with Sohni. He wanted to spend all his time with her and so, decided to take up the job of a servant at her house. Because he would herd their buffaloes, he came to be known as 'Mahiwal'. Hearing of their love, Sohni's father decided to get her married off to another partner. But so strong was their love that they continued to see each other. They would swim across the river in the night and meet in secrecy.
On one such day, Sohni drowns in the river while going to meet her lover. Seeing her drown, Mahiwal too jumps in and drowns and dies. The poster here shows Sohni swimming to meet an eager Mahiwal.
